India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, in fact it is the second fastest growing of the developing economies after China.
With a population of over 1 billion and a rapidly developing infrastructure as well as a fast growing middle class, India represents a very interesting new growth market opportunity for British businesses in a number of sectors.
The freight forwarding industry has been gearing up to cater for this developing market and there are now many freight companies and shipping companies that are able to serve the needs of UK businesses looking to export to India, as well as provide expert advice about the practicalities of international freight to and from India.
As the country develops, there are opportunities for companies looking to export to India right across the board. However, perhaps the greatest opportunities are for companies that can help India build its infrastructure. So as well as machinery, there is an opportunity for companies that have products and services that could help Indian companies make their own products more sophisticated – for example, products related to product testing or design.
UK Trade and Investment, the UK government department that is responsible for helping UK businesses to build their export sales, has identified the following sectors as the ones with the most potential for import into India: Aerospace, Automotive, Food and Drink, Pharmaceutical, Construction, Creative, Education, Engineering,Environmental, Financial, IT and telecoms.
The wide span of these sectors, covering both very large and small items, perishables and highly delicate equipment, means that the challenges faced by the freight services provider in India are complex and varied. However, a freight company or shipping company will be well versed in the needs of these sectors and able to carry out efficient and effective freight transport.
The hefty investment programme currently under way in India to improve its transport infrastructure, IT infrastructure and telecoms, means that there are currently many opportunities for UK businesses able to provide the products, services and skills required to put in place the infrastructure the country will need to take its place as a key player in the world economy. Improvements and upgrades to the freight services industry are likely themselves to be part of the improvements to the infrastructure in India in due course.
At present, India is the 15th largest export market for the UK, but as the country continues to develop, it is likely that it will become still more significant to the UK.
Total imports into India are worth nearly 300 billion US dollars a year. Its largest source of imports is currently China, accounting for 10% of all imports to India. China is followed in importance by the United States, accounting for 8% of all imports to India. The next most important importer to India is Germany (at 4%) followed by Singapore. International freight transport links between these countries are thus particularly well developed.
Trade between the UK and India has increased rapidly in recent years and the UK is now India’s second largest trading partner overall, after the United States.Although at present more goods and services flow from India to the UK than vice versa, this balance is now beginning to be redressed. The freight transport sector is seizing the opportunity and helping British companies understand the potential of the Indian market as well as help make practical issues and export and import paperwork as straightforward as possible.
One thing that makes life easier for the importer to India and the freight forwarding company is that English is the universal language of commerce in India. Although Hindi is the official language in India, only 10% of people in India speak it and so the need for a common language has favoured English, to the advantage of the UK freight company and the UK importer.
Organisations such as the India UK Business Council are also highlighting the opportunities of trade with India to companies in Britain and they carried out a publicity drive to tie in with the recent Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Freight companies and freight forwarding agents are keenly aware of the impact that events like this can have, as such events put countries such as India in the spotlight and raise their global profile, sometimes causing companies to consider new business opportunities for the first time.
Given the increased promotion of the opportunities for business growth in India and the developing transport infrastructure, making freight transport easier, quicker and more cost effective, it is expected that India will soon move up the league table of export markets for the UK and move considerably higher than its current position at N

Financial institutions, businesses and politicians should take heed of three different environmental reports at the end of July even if they do prove the rule that only the bad stuff makes news.
Yet somehow, it all seems to carry on regardless. In the aftermath of the most catastrophic economic situation since the 1930s, is still no sign of contrition from those widely regarded to be most culpable.
They are the financial institutions that speculated wildly on continued growth when bundling dodgy property loans (given to people who had little prospect of repaying them) into obscure financial packages – known as mortgage backed derivatives – that not even some bankers and economists understood.
Is this writer the only person on the planet who can see a similarity to pyramid selling?
Legislation to tighten control and regulation of banks and other financial institutions in the USA, UK and Europe, according to economic experts like Prof Raghuram Rajoram, of Chicago University, and former member of the UK’s Monetary Policy Committee, Dr Sushil Wadhwani, are toothless while the emphasis is still on a recovery based on growth.
Yet it’s feared that the strict austerity measures introduced in the UK, US and Europe are endangering economic recovery and while it may be necessary to cut the massive government debts that propping up the banks has caused it should be done more gradually. Some would go further.
Dr Wadhwani believes what’s needed is a more sustainable – and differently structured – economic model. Despit that, he says, policy makers and financial regulators are making the same policy mistakes and using the same tools as they did in previous recessions and has said: “there’s not enough contrition being shown. … Banks haven’t absorbed the appropriate lessons of the mistakes they made, in fact they’re not even willing to admit that mistakes were made.”
There’s that word sustainable again,. It’s familiar in the spheres of environment, agriculture and the need to grow more food. It should be familiar in the financial and political worlds also.
But what have financial investors and Funds done? They’ve turned their attention to other sources of investment in the form of speculation on basic commodities like grain, artificially pushing up prices of basic foods beyond the means of the poorest on the planet.
Any commodity in short supply is likely of course to be a goot investment viewed from their small and insular world – buy up scarce stocks or options in future trading and the price will rise giving more profit for the investor.
There’s plainly no room in the world of money for ethics.
It’s instructive to put the reports mentioned earlier into this context. Firstly a report on climate change revealed 2010 has been the warmest year on record.
Then came a report that global warming might be the cause of micro-organisms dying out in the world’s oceans. Phytoplankton have been disappearing at a rate of 1% per year since the mid-20th Century. They are of crucial importance to the marine food chain and they also draw down carbon dioxide while producing approximately half the oxyfgen we breathe.
Finally the Financial Times, London, revealed the leaked contents of a report by the World Bank into investors from rich nations buying up African farmland. It’s due in August and expected to conclude that foreign investors without the slightest agricultural expertise are threatening local resources by buying up farmland in places like Africa in order to gain on commodity prices.
Anti poverty campaigners have already raised concerns about the effect of speculative land buying on the poorest local producers they push out while investing little in improving agricultural techniques to meet the huge growth of food production needed to feed a growing population.
It may be naïve but wouldn’t it actually benefit investors to put their resources into those techniques – like the new generation of low-chem agricultural products, including biopesticides, biofungicides and yield enhancers – into training small producers to use them and into infrastructures to get the produce to market to ensure a sustainable return on their investment?
Or is it all about short term gain and selfishness for a minority of super-powerful people with no real concept of living on the same, shared planet, in the same, rapidly-deteriorating environment, breathing the same globally warmed air?
It is more than chance that running the world on a continuous economic growth model in a largely unregulated market coincides with accelerated destruction of rain forests, soil fertility, global warming and a host of now annual extreme weather events, like current monsoon in Pakistan.
Sustainable economic models are plainly as important to people’s survival as they are to the planet’s and it’s a lesson of history that financial institutions, regulators, politicians and powerful multinational businesses all need to learn – fast.
It’s likely that restoring the planet’s environmental health depends on sustainable models of economies, financial institutions government and business as much as in agriculture, says consumer journalist Ali Withers, and longer term investment in low-chem agricultural products like biofungicides should replace short term land and commodity speculation.
