If a defaulted credit card has been written off on your credit then sold to a collection agency, they usually change your account number and make it look like it is new…thus extending the life of that default. When can one argue that 7 years has passed and that the default should be removed?

I’m applying for Social Security total disability. I also have defaulted student loans. I know the Department of Education has a claim against me to offset my income tax refund (but good luck because I can’t work).
If I get SS disability, can they offset that to repay my defaulted loans?

I know defaulted loans can hurt your credit for a longer time than bankruptcy. If I can’t get my loans discharged in a bankruptcy will the default still show up on my credit or can i consolidate them or something? I don’t want to have a bankruptcy and defaulted loans plastered all over my credit for the next 15 years.

A friend told me that they defaulted on their private loans and the government bought them, no longer making them private and easier to consolidate. Is that true?

Bought a car through a dealer and a separate company did the finance and offered 9% variable interest, now the finance company went bust. It was then taken over by another finance company who have now increased the the rate to 30% interest. I have never missed a payment and always have paid my previous car finance deals off earlier than the term agreement. I know it says variable interest, but surely an increase of 21% is unfair?

I’m trying to work this around in my head, but no luck so far. How exactly does this work? When you take a loan out and repay it back, the economy gains more money, but what happens when a lot of people default on their loans? Like…for student loans or something? Would it cause something like the subprime mortgage crisis to happen?

I have been out of the country for three years and my loans are in default. Once I get back to the states, I can bring them current no problem. Problem is, at this point I don’t even know who owns my loans anymore. Where do I find out who to talk to?

I am a single mother of three, so even a good income has to be very well budgeted. I have roughly $100,000 in defaulted student loans, so most consolidation and other programs are out of the question for me. I have been asked to pay more than I can afford monthly for these loans. What can I do to both get these paid and save my credit?

I owe $9,000 in student loans. They just started garnishing my wages for $500/month. The loans were from 1998 and do not appear on my credit report. The collection company told me that once they’re paid off that they will appear as not in default on my credit.
