Is it better to close paid off credit card accounts or keep them open, if you want to improve your score?

I have about 8 credit card accounts, only two have moderate balances, a few more with low balances and three at zero balance. Would it improve or hurt my credit score to close the three with zero balances?
I do have three paid in full they are zero balances- so I should keep them open- even at zero?

Is it best to close a credit card account after you have paid it off?

I just paid off several credit cards using a consolidation loan. I was wondering if I should close my credit card accounts or not. I have heard that it looks bad on your credit report to close them all and I do not want anything to look bad on my credit report because I am planning on buying a house in a few years. Any input will be greatly appreciated!
Just a little more information: the monthly loan payment is just as much as my MINIMUM monthly payments on my loan.

I have a credit card with a very high limit but a very low balance. If they closed it then my available credit to balance ratio would shoot up to about 60% which is horrible. I do know that I have to stay active with purchasing and paying it first and foremost though.

I have several payday loans. Its not that I don’t want to pay them, but I am getting behind on my other bills I want to know if there is someone or someplace I can go to so that I can consolidate these into one bill and cut down on the interest.

I pay off my credit card monthly. Although i do this, I still manage to spend way more than I originally intend to and it needs to stop. My solution is to close my credit card. Will canceling my credit card damage my credit? Will not having anything active like a credit card stop credit from building?
