Can a Canadian finance an engagement ring down in the states, from a store like Zales?

Engagement rings are SO much cheaper to purchase in the States! Is it possible for a Canadian to drive down to the states and purchase an engagement ring on a payment plan? Or do you have to be American in order to finance? Any and all answers are greatly appreciated!

You may have to contact Zales and ask them what their policies are with financing. If you give them your situation, I am sure you can work something out with them. Their customer service # is 1-800-311-JEWEL (5393).

It will depend on the individual store’s policy, but I imagine large retailers like Zales wouldn’t object.

I’m Canadian and have had no problem setting up financing for U.S purchases.

I would not recommend Zales – rumor is that they may be going out of business so any warranty you have will be voided.

This may or may not be a problem, probably not if you have a Visa, Mastercard, etc. You could even purchase it online from an American wesbite from the comfort of your own home.

That said, a major reason why American diamonds are cheaper is because Canadian jewellers typically sell CANADIAN diamonds, which are some of the best quality and most expensive in the world. Most American mass jewellers sell diamonds from Africa, etc. which keeps the price down (but you often have a lower quality diamond so you get what you pay for).

Some people also refer to those diamonds as “blood diamonds”, but I won’t get into such a debate here. Not all are of course, but many.

I personally would save up and just get a smaller Canadian diamond. I would also go to a local jeweller who can custom set a ring for you as opposed to going to a mass store. The cost is often not nearly as much as you’d think, and the personal craftsmanship and quality will be worth it for years to come.

Also, once you factor in driving down to the US, shipping, exchange rates, etc. is it really saving you much money in the end? Something to think about,

All of that said, if your heart is set on buying from the US, contact the store personally. Depending on who they use as their underwriter, they may or may not accept clients outside of the US. I also agree that you may want to be careful, as the economy in the US is still quite bad. If Americans on here say that a store may be going under, I believe them. Tread with caution.

Good luck!

Nicole,

I highly recommend checking out http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rin… or http://design.jared-diamonds.com/engagem… Both sites let you design the exact engagement ring you want, and will ship free to Canada.

I bought my now-wife a James Allen engagement ring and we both couldn’t be happier. She absolutely loves the ring, and I payed 30% less than the rings we were looking at in-store.

Seriously, give online a look – I guarantee you’ll thank me that you did.

Good luck!
