Learn About a Lawsuit Pre-Settlement Loan
Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
In the United States lawsuits are a common occurrence. Civil lawsuits can be filed for a wide range of reasons, including but not limited to personal injury, wrongful death, neglect, sexual harassment, civil rights, class action and many more. Many of these lawsuits brought forth to the civil court system can be considered frivolous, meaning they have no merit but to attempt to get money. However, for plaintiffs in civil lawsuits with merit they can find themselves in a situation that can take months if not years to resolve. If your lawsuit is related to injury or wrongful death you might have taken a serious financial blow, whether it’s due to you not being able to work anymore or loss of a family member’s financial support. In a situation like this a plaintiff in a lawsuit does have a solution that might be right for them; a lawsuit pre settlement loan.
The concept of a lawsuit pre settlement loan is quite simple. A company or group of investors buy interest into pending lawsuits by giving cash loans to the plaintiff, in return they receive the cash loan back, plus interest and fees if they plaintiff wins their lawsuit. In theory, this sounds like an easy business practice, but since lawsuit settlement loan providers take a big risk not all lawsuit cases can get funding. The risk I’m referring to is that lawsuit settlement loans are non-recourse debts. Lawsuit settlement loans are considered non-recourse debts because if your lawsuit verdict is in favor of the defendant you are not required to pay back the loan. That’s right, if the plaintiff does not win their lawsuit they are not required to pay back anything to the lawsuit settlement loan provider. So lawsuit settlement loan providers do their best to stay away from frivolous lawsuits.
Now, in light of the risk that a lawsuit settlement loan provider takes it should be noted that the fees and interest rates charged on these types of loans aren’t that low. Some charge anywhere from 2.9% to 8.9% or more, per month on the loaned amount. There is usually a one-time fee based on the amount that is loaned, which can range from $100 to $7000. Most plaintiffs are only able to get a loan at 10% or less of what their lawsuit is actually worth. This helps protects the plaintiff from owing more if they win their lawsuit then what is actually awarded by the judge or jury. In light of understanding how you are charged for a lawsuit settlement loan it should help you decide if it’s right for you.
Getting approved for a lawsuit settlement loan isn’t the same as a traditional loan. Your employment history, income amount and credit history do not play a role in the approval process. Remember, as we learned earlier they base their loans on the actual merit of the lawsuit case. A lawsuit settlement loan provider will review your current case and speak with your attorney prior to approving or denying the loan. It’s a good idea to give your attorney notice you apply for a lawsuit settlement loan to keep the process smooth, and to make sure any agreements with your attorney won’t be broken by accept a lawsuit settlement loan. At the end of the day, it’s up to the plaintiff to decide if a lawsuit settlement loan is right for them, everything should be discussed with family members and a financial advisor if one is available.

How and why is my credit card affected when I open and close a credit card?

Is it better to close down this new card or keep it open with a zero balance? How does opening and closing account affect my credit score?
Corporate Finance
Monday, September 28th, 2009Product Description
Corporate Finance, by Ross, Westerfield, and Jaffe is a popular textbook that emphasizes the modern fundamentals of the theory of finance, while providing contemporary examples to make the theory come to life. The authors aim to present corporate finance as the working of a small number of integrated and powerful intuitions, rather than a collection of unrelated topics. They develop the central concepts of modern finance: arbitrage, net present value, efficient markets, agency theory, options, and the trade-off between risk and return, and use them to explain corporate finance with a balance of theory and application. The well-respected author team is known for their clear, accessible presentation of material that makes this text an excellent teaching tool. Brad Jordan, known for his successful work on the RWJ Fundamentals and Essentials books, contributed to this edition. His influence will be seen particularly in the writing style with smoother coverage of topics, and the increased quality in the problem material.

Product Description
A fascinating and timely chronicle of America’s tortured relationship to money–and the future crisis that looms as a result of our overwhelming reliance on credit.
Credit-card debt is choking American prosperity off at the neck. In Credit Card Nation, Robert D. Manning tells a fascinating story about the present and future consequences of credit dependence across all strata of U.S. society. Through extensive interviews with consumers, Manning talks to debtors, and to average Americans, affected by what Manning describes as our “credit card nation”: an American juggernaut of indebtedness that spans personal, corporate, and governmental debt.Amazon.com Review
No interest for one year! No annual fee! No minimum payments for six months! And, if you want to believe Robert Manning, there’s no way out of the debt that we find ourselves in, as individuals and as a country. Credit Card Nation combines debt of every kind–consumer, corporate, and governmental–and creates a vast landscape of profit-spewing lenders and struggling debtors present at every level of economics. Appalling statistics set readers off on a depressing journey: the years between 1980 and 1994 saw annual consumer charges skyrocket from $170 billion to $581 billion, with the average household carrying over $4,000 in revolving debt. Accompanied by the erasure of nearly $100 billion in corporate debt and tremendous tax cuts for ever-merging conglomerates, the end of the 20th century seems to be just the beginning of an overwhelming cycle. While Manning’s book is extensively researched, it is also extremely readable. Individual stories of junk bondsmen, corporate raiders, and middle-class consumers are threaded throughout the pages of charts and statistics, with a few surprises. While most media would have us believe that students who rack up charge accounts are totally irresponsible, the reality is that some of these students are helping their families with cash-advance loans to make mortgage or insurance payments. Emphasis is also placed on the tremendous advertising budgets of credit card companies: Manning comments on “how quickly the cultural norms have changed in the Credit Card Nation,” we see a poster insisting “money can’t buy you love, but a credit card can get you started.” This is not a self-help book, and Manning has no 12-step program for debtors at any level. Credit Card Nation simply tells it as it is. –Jill Lightner

A lot of people have been telling me to get a credit card, but I wonder if it really is necessary. Please give me some good reasons to get a credit card other than building good credit. The only other advantage I know about is those point-system/rewards credit cards, that earn you miles or other things. And what is the best credit card to get for a first time credit card holder? The number of choices are a little overwhelming. How did you choose your first/main credit card?
